Check it Out: Facebook Games Get Deeper Edition




I am not one to argue Farmville is not a game. I love Zynga's ability to show over 100 million people they really like to play games on line. But what about people who play other games and quickly grow bored? This market has been rumbling for a while and they seem to have found one of the first games. After receiving great reviews and feedback at E3, Liquid Entertainment and Atari's D&D: Heroes of Neverwinter made it to Facebook.

Go ahead, jump in and play. Almost 300k other people did in the first week or so . . . . .

How are those two sentences even connected, UNLESS you mistakenly believe that Farmville's game-status is something QUALITATIVE. Meaning, it is not saying "Farmville is Bad" in any way to say that it is not a game.


I generally like your blog, but what happened here? Did you let your nephew write a guest article, or something?

I appreciate the comment. Perhaps I was less than clear. A lot of people bitch and moan that Farmville is not a game and Zynga is only an analytics company. I am not one of them. However, I don't think Farmville is either deep or targeted at a core gamer. Liquid's Heroes of Neverwinter addresses many of the complaints of those people - even though I am not one of them.

These are two very, very different, and un-related claims. My point is not to say "Farmville is bad" or that "Farmville is good" - at all. I'm saying that it is not a game. You can neither win, nor lose in Farmville. I think it is better classified as a toy, or perhaps a simulator of some strange system in which all numbers only, ever, go upwards indefinitely.

I'm sorry to be confrontational and, I'll admit a bit mean with the "nephew" comment. However, I felt that as a reader, this post was not up to your usual standards. I think you're a great writer in general.

Every time I told people in suits and ties - or my parents - I was in the game business, they started to talk about kids. They viewed our business as the toy business. Games are for children.
